'Are You Not Entertained?' The Reason a Two-Day Test Was No Less a Genuine Test.

In a display cabinet on the third floor of the MCG is housed a electric pink suit worn by the pop star. The show in front of a massive crowd of attendees was seen as a major hit.

Perhaps you don't like his music. You might think he is the finest offering to music in history. Or you could adopt a reasonable stance, conceding that some tracks are belting while others are terrible.

The point being is that entertainment can be delivered diversely. Preferences differ. There is no one way to produce art or even the longest format.

The Incomparable Variety of The Long Game

The five-day game boasts incomparable variety. One struggles to think of another sport where the playing is so reliant upon conditions.

The climate, the hour of play, the ball – the factors are countless. Crucially is the pitch.

If Test cricket is art, the wicket is the canvas on which the cricketers craft their legacy.

An Abstract Contest: The Fourth Test

The fourth Ashes Test between the two sides was Test cricket cubism, the established format dismantled and stuck back together in abstract form.

It must be stated this is not a justification of the wicket which produced a triumph and the another short match of the series.

Leaving a thick layer on the pitch, leading to a cascade of wickets being taken in less than six sessions, is not an even battle between offense and defense.

A Diverse Legacy: The Core of Test Cricket

But any suggestion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be footnoted as illegitimate, is incorrect.

Test cricket is a diverse canvas, 2,615 parts and ongoing. Sometimes, like in Melbourne, the ball does all sorts for the fast men. In contrast, it spins sharply on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it spits like a cobra.

The close matches are even more exciting because of the patience made in other matches.

Adaptation: The Core Skill

Specific conditions are accepted more easily than others.

The debate in at the MCG was that the equilibrium was tipped too far towards the fielding side. That the top batters were unable from showcasing their talents.

Test cricket is about adapting to challenges – assessing the conditions and adjusting appropriately. The top two individual innings were made by recognized batters. One team made more mistakes than the other, and thus ended up second best.

Pure Elation: The Fan Perspective

Go and inform the fans who have experienced a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

Among the crowd of the ground, countless fans celebrated and sang their songs, fostering a party atmosphere in a stronghold of Australian cricket.

There was optimism as the fielding side surged, impetus when the top order fought back, and rapturous celebration when the result was achieved.

Polar Opposites: The Spectrum of Test Matches

The venue has previous experience with pitch problems. Previously, a Test there featured a wicket with the excitement of a a damp squib.

That contest was a marathon, with limited drama and slow play. The latest encounter and that slow Test are extreme ends of the scale – both are not perfect, yet historical weight can be found in both.

Deep into the series into the Ashes contest, it is the two-day matches that will live longest in the memory.

"It's not the death of Test cricket at all," observed a veteran. "The people who have been privileged to see these short time have been experienced some genuine drama. A unique show."

Signs of Progress: A Glimmer of Hope

In the lead-in to this Test, the captain spoke like a man carrying the weight of the world on his mind.

The squad protected him, bringing back the joy to his persona.

New faces delivered with key contributions. These are baby steps, not nearly enough to guarantee long-term futures, but a foundation to use as a platform.

At the very least, this triumph takes its place among other notable performances in dead rubbers.

As the crowd left into a glorious Melbourne evening, the players gathered on the field to commence their own celebrations.

Celebrate the win, lads. This victory was hard-fought.
